How to Create More Consistent Enquiry Opportunities
A two-minute read for self-employed people and B2B service businesses who want a more reliable way of bringing new work into their business.
A QUICK DISCLAIMER BEFORE YOU START
I originally built this for myself.
I’ve been self-employed for over 30 years and wanted a straightforward way of getting in front of the right people that I could manage myself. It worked, so I now set it up for other businesses.
Whether you ever work with me or just take a few ideas from what you’re about to read, hopefully there’s something useful in it for you.
One thing I will say though, none of this works unless you actually do it. You have to send the connection requests, send the messages and do the follow-ups. If somebody wants me to set it up for them, I make sure they’re prepared to do that first.
And if you do decide to speak to me afterwards, don’t panic. I’m not going to give you the hard sell.
If you’re responsible for bringing in new clients while also doing the work, you’ll probably recognise this.
One month you’re wondering how you’re going to fit everything in.
The next you’re wondering where your next client is coming from.
It’s frustrating because nothing has really changed.
You’re still good at what you do.
Your clients are still happy.
People still recommend you.
Yet somehow new enquiries seem to arrive in waves.
One minute you’re turning work away.
The next you’ve got space in the diary and catch yourself thinking:
“It’d be nice if the phone rang today.”
The problem usually isn’t your business.
It’s what happens when work gets busy.
A client rings.
A quote needs sending.
Someone wants “just a quick change.”
An invoice needs chasing.
You promise yourself you’ll spend half an hour on LinkedIn tomorrow…
…and tomorrow somehow becomes next week.
If that sounds familiar, you’re exactly the sort of person I built this for.
Because I don’t believe most self-employed people have a marketing problem.
I think they have a consistency problem.
The businesses that seem to have work all year round usually aren’t better than you.
They’ve simply built a better system for bringing new opportunities into their business.
Referrals and recommendations are great. The problem is you can’t control when the next one arrives.
A simple outbound system gives you another option. A way to proactively create new opportunities yourself, rather than waiting for them to come to you.
Does any of this sound familiar?
✓ Most of your work comes through referrals.
✓ You’re brilliant at looking after existing clients.
✓ Finding the next client always seems to happen when everything else has been finished.
✓ You know LinkedIn could help, but never quite get into a routine with it.
✓ You know you should follow people up more often, but life simply gets in the way.
If you recognised yourself in three or more of those, keep reading.

Here’s the good news.
You don’t need to become a marketing expert to create more consistent opportunities.
You don’t need to spend thousands on advertising.
And you don’t need to spend hours every day on LinkedIn.
Most businesses that consistently bring in new work simply do a few straightforward things consistently.
The aim is to give yourself a proactive way of creating opportunities, rather than relying entirely on referrals, recommendations or somebody finding you.
The system I use to do that is built around LinkedIn direct messages.
Not automated messages.
Not spam.
Not pitching strangers.
Just introducing yourself to the right businesses, building genuine relationships and staying in touch until the timing is right.
Here are the four principles behind the approach.
01
Build Confidence
02
Right Businesses
03
Stay in Their Mind
04
Keep Opportunities Coming
1. Give People Confidence to Get in Touch
People rarely become clients the first time they hear about you.
Before they send an enquiry…
Before they ask for a quote…
Before they pick up the phone…
They want confidence they’re talking to the right person.
Can you help someone like me?
Do you understand businesses like mine?
Do you feel like someone I’d be comfortable working with?
That’s why every message should feel personal and relevant.
When people trust you, they’re far more likely to enquire when they need what you do.
2. Introduce Yourself to the Right Businesses
Most people think LinkedIn is all about posting.
I don’t.
Posting has its place, but it’s not where I think the biggest opportunity is.
The real value is being able to identify businesses you’d genuinely like to work with and introduce yourself to them.
You’re no longer waiting for the right person to find you, recommend you or happen to need you at the right time.
You can proactively start creating those opportunities yourself.
Not with everyone.
Just the right people.
The goal isn’t to sell them something in the first message.
It’s to start a relationship before they need your services.
Some won’t reply.
Some will.
Some of those relationships will become enquiries.
Some enquiries will become paying clients.
That’s how opportunities start.
3. Stay in Their Mind
Very few people become clients the first time they hear about you.
Sometimes they’re busy.
Sometimes the timing simply isn’t right.
That doesn’t mean they aren’t interested.
It just means today isn’t the day.
This is where posting helps.
Not because posts generate lots of clients on their own.
Because they remind people you exist.
Combined with sensible follow-ups, they keep you in people’s minds until the timing changes.
The businesses that consistently win work aren’t always the loudest.
They’re simply the ones people remember when they finally need someone who does what they do.
4. Keep New Opportunities Coming In
Everything you’ve just read depends on one habit.
Protect around 30 minutes during each working day to introduce yourself to businesses you’d genuinely like to work with.
Not random businesses.
The right businesses.
Some days you’ll feel like it.
Some days you won’t.
Some days you’ll be too busy.
Those are usually the days it matters most.
Because every message creates a new opportunity.
Some people will reply.
Some replies will become enquiries.
Some enquiries will become paying clients.
You don’t need every message to work.
You simply need enough new opportunities coming into your business that work keeps coming in month after month.
That’s how businesses stop swinging between busy and quiet.
That’s how they build a steadier flow of enquiries and new clients.
And it means you’re no longer relying entirely on somebody else creating your next opportunity for you.
Referrals can still come in.
Recommendations can still come in.
People can still find you through your website or LinkedIn posts.
But now you’ve also got a proactive way of creating opportunities yourself.
You don’t need to spend hours every day on LinkedIn.
You don’t need to become an influencer.
You don’t need complicated funnels or automation.
You simply need a straightforward system you can stick to.
Why I’ve deliberately kept it simple
The system is completely manual, with AI helping with the time-consuming bits.
Human-led. AI-assisted.
Your AI Assistant can research somebody before you contact them, draft your messages and help work out what to say when somebody replies.
It drafts. You tweak. You press send.
Nothing is automatically sent.
You choose who you contact. You decide what gets said. And when somebody replies, you’re the person having the conversation.
AI makes the process easier. It doesn’t automate the relationship.
You’ve already seen it work.
If you came to this page through one of my LinkedIn messages, you’ve already experienced exactly how the approach starts.
01
We connected
I introduced myself without trying to sell you anything.
02
I offered you something useful
A short guide that might help with something you’re already thinking about.
03
You chose whether to continue
No hard sell. No chasing. You decided whether it was worth taking the next step.
That’s the same system I build for my clients.
And I try to make the whole process as straightforward as possible.
We start with a bit of back-and-forth so I can properly understand your business, what you sell, who you’d genuinely like more of and how you naturally communicate.
I’ll look through your website, LinkedIn profile and anything else that helps me get a proper feel for the business.
Then most of the hard work moves over to me.
I research the market, work out who we should be targeting, build your Sales Navigator searches and create the messaging and follow-up approach around your business.
I create your first useful resource and build your AI Assistant so it understands your business and can help research prospects, write messages and suggest replies.
It isn’t a standard setup with your company name dropped into it.
By the time I hand everything over, your first list of potential clients is already there.
I’ll also give you a few short videos showing you how to use what I’ve built.
You choose who you contact. You decide what gets sent. And you have the conversations.
I’ve just done the heavy lifting at the beginning so you’ve got a system built around your business that you understand, control and can actually use.

Want To Go A Bit Deeper First?
The 8-Minute Guide explains the thinking behind the system in more detail, including how the different parts work together.
And if your website might be part of the problem…
Creating more enquiries is only half the job.
Once someone decides to find out more, your website needs to give them the confidence to get in touch.
I’ve also put together a short 2-minute guide explaining what every good business website should be doing to help turn interest into enquiries.
